Business Entity Searches

Most states offer an online database for registered business entities. Information typically provided includes the type of entity, date of filing, registered address, authorized representatives, county of filings, and previous names. Keywords can be searched to identify businesses whose names contain those keywords. Some databases offer advanced search options such as the ability to specify the type of entities searched (including corporations, limited liability companies, trademarks, trade-names, previous business names, foreign corporations, partnerships), options to search for both active and inactive businesses, searches by registered agent, and entity file number searches. These databases can be useful research tools and can also serve as a way to confirm validity and good standing of a business. Keep in mind that a company may be registered in different state from where it is located, or under a different name, so you may need to confirm the details.

Finding Ideas for Products to Export from the USA

Every day US products are exported to every corner of the world, adding up to hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods and services exported each year. Many of these exports are completed by small and medium-sized business. The US Department of Commerce estimates export revenues from SMEs in 2007 at $312 billion, up from $102.8 billion in 1992, with SMEs representing 30.2 percent of total exports in 2007. This growth is indicative of boundless opportunity for the international entrepreneur. Used vehicles, vitamins, lighting fixtures, specialty beverages, cosmetics, medical supplies, and construction equipment are a few possibilities among hundreds of thousands. Following are a few resources to identify US companies with export potential.

The US Commercial which is the export trade promotion unit of the International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, produces Commercial News USA, a bimonthly publication promoting US goods and services for export. US companies with products and services meeting minimum US-content requirements are able to advertise in Commercial News USA.

The publication is sent around the world to readers in nearly every country. For anyone interested in identifying opportunities in international trade development, this magazine is an outstanding resource. Every business listed is interested trying to expand their export business and looking for new business partners. Electronic subscriptions are available for the United States, and both electronic and printed versions for anyone outside the USA. Past issue archives, and well as listings by industry are available on the US Commercial News website.

Another directory of US companies with export potential is The Export Yellow Pages, which is also produced in cooperation with the US Department of Commerce, through a partnership with Global Publishers LLC, a publisher of business directories based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Thomas Net provides an extensive listing of industrial suppliers in the US and Canada. Basic listings are offered for free, and the the directory contains hundreds of thousands of companies. Searches are efficient and user-friendly.

Kiva: Supporting Entrepreneurs Worldwide Through Microfinance

This blog aims to reach readers interested in the intersection of international business development and the entrepreneurial process. As such, some of you will be interested in learning about Kiva which provides a way for anyone that can spare $25.00 to participate directly in the growth of small business around the world.

There are many skilled, experienced, and hard-working entrepreneurs with opportunities to grow their businesses, but who have no access to reasonably priced financing. Most commercial banks must turn down such small loans simply because they would lose money on them. Such loans require a very high administrative cost and high risk relative to the amount of potential return for the lender. It normally makes more business sense for a lender to fund one large loan to a more stable borrower than to process a hundred small loans even if the smaller loans total up to a larger dollar amount. Regrettably, financial reason does not permit consideration of such measures as relative need, direct impact on a family, and equality in opportunity. The unfortunate but realistic result is that generally those who need money the most are the least likely to get it, and those that can prove that they need money the least are able to get money the easiest. The process of microfinance makes it possible for people without little or no collateral or credit to get access to fairly priced small value loans.

Kiva provides a platform for micro-lending that connects individual lenders and borrowers by compiling loan opportunities from well established microfinance institutions around the world. Users are able to research loan requests from entrepreneurs and small businesses around the world. The lender can see pictures of the borrowers, read about their lives and businesses, and understand their goals upon receiving their loan. Loans can be made for as little as $25.00, and the lender receives updates and reports about the impact of their loan.

Loans go directly to borrowers via Kiva's microfinance partner institutions. Thanks in part to the support of PayPal providing free payment processing, Kiva is able to give 100% of your loan directly to borrowers. Although it may seem that this type of loan would be very risky, the payback rate is actually very high. When your loan is paid back, you have the option to withdraw your money, or to give back through another loan. Please have a look at Kiva's website and consider lending.

Market Research Case Study:
Export of US Made Pet Products

This posting shares some brief market research gathered online using easily accessible information. The goal is not to produce a comprehensive list of contacts, it's simply to provide a brief conjecture of readily acquirable information, with some actual examples and to discuss the process and methods used to find contacts which could be applied across other industries.

Pet products was chosen arbitrarily as a general industry focus, with the goal of gathering potential contacts for a hypothetical US supplier looking to grow its export business. The list of companies gathered is posted at the end of this entry. For companies looking to grow their US sales, or for foreign manufacturers interested in selling in the US, a good starting point is the Pet Industry Distributor's Association, online at http://www.pida.org. This list produced here was gathered without any experience or special knowledge of pet industry and without a particular focus within the industry. The list has been limited to companies with websites. There is a mix of distributors and retailers of pet products with varying specialties which have not been vetted or screened other than a brief glance at and quick assessment of their websites.

As a starting point we identified with a basic search a manufacturer of pet products that has already established an export network for their products, coming up with Chris Christensen Systems pet shampoo products. Their website contains a list of international distributors which were entered into a list to begin a database of contacts. From this list, each individual distributor listed was searched to find other sites where these same distributors are listed. Through this process of cross-referencing one can form a seemingly endless list of contacts. Naturally, the idea is to choose the more relevant companies for your particular needs and thereby find more companies that would fall into that same category of interest. To find producers of a similar product to yours you might try searching the World Wide Pet Industry Association's Pet Industry Resource Guide which has an extensive listing of product categories and corresponding companies listed.

Other places to check for company lists are corresponding industry trade shows and associations. Often their websites contain lists of exhibitors and members and links to other resources available to the public. Some examples of pet industry trade shows are Pet South America, Global Pet Expo, Zoo Russia, and Pet Fair Asia. Examples of industry trade associations are the American Pet Products Association, The Pet Industry Association of Australia, and and the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council.

According to your particular product and regional focus, there may be more specific resources. For example if the product being marketed were a line of aquarium lamps, and Australia was identified as a market that you wanted to pursue, you could start to focus in and find contacts by searching a keyword like aquarium through the Pet Industry Association of Australia online at http://www.piaa.net.au. For Great Britain, the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association has a database of importers, consultants, manufacturers and retailers at http://www.ornamentalfish.org/. If you wanted to focus on Japan you might try contacting the Japan Aquarium Fish Association http://www.jafa-net.org. Ornamental Fish International is an organization based in The Netherlands which has a membership directory that enables searches by country, online at http://www.ornamental-fish-int.org. Once you have identified some particular contacts that look promising, these can be cross-searched to find more companies that are similar.

Gathering potential contacts is not difficult. Real challenges and work come with knowing where to focus efforts, getting in touch, communicating the right information, following up, and developing relationships with time. For our hypothetical company working to export a US-made product, the US Department of Commerce US Commercial Service offers export assistance services. They have trade specialists that are available to assist with exporting, and also have market research available to registered users. As an example they have an article about Italy's pet products market, which even includes best product prospects for Italy: http://www.buyusa.gov/italy/en/pet.html.

With some analytical searching and thoughtful implementation of information readily available it may be possible to find potential business partners online on your own with a little time and effort. Here is the list that was created, and following it a customized search tool with related sites that might help find information for your specific topic within the pet industry.

Australia Business Number Directory

Australian Business Numbers were introduced as an initiative of the Australian Taxation Office in 2000 as a way for various government agencies to reference businesses using a single publicly available identification number. While ABNs are primarily used to facilitate business tax reporting, energy credits, and other government agency interactions, they also serve as a way to verify that a company is actively registered, and to confirm some basic company details and history.

As an example, one could SA Liquor Distributors, of Torrensville, South Australia, on the web at http://www.sald.com.au. Searching for "SA Liquor" in the ABN lookup brings up the company's ABN records at the top of the search results. These records allow the user to confirm when and where the company was registered with the Australian government. In this case everything looks active, and the company's online contact details match the postal code registered with the Australian Taxation Office.

Further details on the company are cross-referenced here as well. The Australian Securities & Investments Commission maintains an index of corporate and business names, complete with former names that the company has used, (KARANA WHOLESALE LIQUOR DISTRIBUTORS LIMITED), and changes in filing documentation such as business structure and company officeholders.

While the ABN lookup is a way to double-check that a business is officially registered with the Australian government, is certainly not meant as a explicit method of verifying that a business is legitimate. Having and active ABN obviously doesn't reveal if a company is honest or even noncriminal. One should also keep in mind that not all companies are required to have an ABN. If the annual turnover of a company is $75,000 or more ($150,000 for a non-profit), the company must register for goods and services tax credits, and an ABN is required for that application. Any company that is registered as a tax-exempt charity or to receive deductible gifts must have an ABN.

The ABN lookup could also be used as a free, albeit haphazard and scattered, market research tool. To relate back to the earlier example of SA Liquor Distributors, one could use the ABN advanced search option and search for "liquor" within the Australian state of South Australia. This search yields some 80 listings, some active and some canceled, all in Southern Australia and relating to liquor in some way. Results include liquor stores, various liquor industry councils and groups, as well as other wholesale liquor merchants. Playing around with these searches and resulting information could certainly be useful depending on your research and business objectives.

Compared with other online business directories, the Australian ABN lookup is easy to use, highly functional, and capable of producing useful and accurate results.

Emerging Trends in the 3PL Third Party Logistics Industry

Emerging Trends in the 3PL Third Party Logistics Industry by goglobal

The marketplace for third-party logistics is arguably the largest market in the world. Any physical good that comes into or goes out of the United States requires extensive logistics planning and management and must be cleared by U.S. Customs. Because of the complexities of these processes, most businesses choose to hire a 3PL provider to manage the transportation, clearance, warehousing, and distribution of their shipments.

Market Statistics

In 2006, imports to the United States exceeded $2.2 trillion (a 10.5% increase over 2005) and exports exceeded $1.4 trillion (an increase of 12.8%). Each of these goods required a number of shipping and warehousing services and must receive US Customs clearance… this is where Go Global takes over.

In 2006, the total revenue for the 3PL industry was $110.6 billion, representing a total industry growth rate of 11.9%. Datamonitor projects that by 2010, the total 3PL market will exceed $140 billion.

Global trade management is also part of the focus at Go Global Logistics. In 2005, the global trade management segment expanded to $222 million, and is expected to swell to $405 million by 2010, a cumulative annual growth rate of 12.8%.

The Go Global Marketplace is cornering this portion of the market, encouraging small and mid-sized businesses to participate in global trade, under the consultation of Go Global. By using the marketplace to manage our customer’s transactions, Go Global is able to provide FREE transaction management, shipment tracking, trade negotiations, and our “bidding war” reverse auction function, adding value for our clients and strengthening our comparative advantage over the competition.

Many companies entered international markets precipitously and are only now beginning to address the lack of visibility across their supply chains. Only the largest 3PL (third party logistics) providers offer the newest technologies like online tracking, and 90% of enterprises report that their global supply chain technology is inadequate to provide the timely information necessary for budget and cash-flow planning as well as effective management. Go Global Logistics offers every tool your company needs to have an efficient and transparent supply chain to make your importing and exporting as easy and error free as possible.

One of the most counterintuitive aspects of the freight forwarding and third party logistics industry is the lack of a central location for international trade information and services. The industry is extremely

• Hoffman, William. “3PLs Reach Record Revenue.” Traffic World. 23 Apr. 2007.

• Datamonitor. “Global Air Freight & Logistics.” http://www.datamonitor.com. Apr. 2007.

fragmented and operates behind the scenes. For this reason, many businesses with a desire to enter international markets have no idea where to begin.

Furthermore, those companies that do provide complete 3PL services are very large and have been focusing on maintaining a small number of larger accounts. Many small and mid-sized businesses who were fortunate enough to find a reliable 3PL provider find themselves being squeezed out and not having their contracts renewed. The smaller third party logistics providers do not offer the newer supply chain technologies, and are characterized by “old school” business practices.

Go Global is involved in many of the fastest growing markets in the world such as Asia and Western Europe where the market is expected to grow 33% over the next five years. It is projected that after five years, 3PLs (third party logistics providers) will handle more than 57% of the sector’s supply chain requirements. This provides tremendous growth opportunities for Go Global.

Go Global is also slowly expanding into the African markets as the infrastructure and problems with governmental corruption improves. Foreign Direct Investment in Africa has been steadily rising, a sign that it will soon be a viable target market for Go Global Logistics. In 2006, FDI increased 26.5% to $38.8 billion. If this trend continues to develop, Africa may be the next China of international trade, and Go Global hopes to be there to ride the wave.

Redefining the Market

Most small and mid-sized businesses search for 3PL providers on the internet, where 3PL advertising coverage is abysmal. Upon performing an online search for “customs broker” “3PL” or “logistics,” the results yielded are generally unrelated to the services businesses are seeking. Go Global plans to capitalize on this by establishing a strong online presence with user-friendly information geared towards businesses new to international trade.

By providing innovative features that are valuable to our customers like the Go Global Online Marketplace, we attract a wide range of businesses seeking to or already engaged in international trade. The Go Global Marketplace is redefining the market by creating a centralized online marketplace allowing importers and exporters across the globe to connect and trade in a secure and efficient platform.

By providing low cost, scalable, online services with the same level of visibility available from the largest 3PLs, Go Global is redefining the world of international trade and supply chain services and continues to empower small and mid-sized businesses to compete on the global stage.

Go Global Logistics – US based company provides, customs clearance, customs broker, freight forwarding, third party logistics (3pl), 4pl and supply chain management for international shipping & trade in Boston, Massachusetts and New Zealand. Port of Boston offers container shipments via ocean freight, also serving for air freight and Rail & Road freight.

International Phytosanitary Standard for Wood Packaging ISPM15 Regulations

International Phytosanitary Standard for Wood Packaging ISPM15 Regulations by Ann Coveney

There has been increasing concern in recent years about the spread of pests, such as the Asian longhorn beetle and the Pine Wood Nematode, since wood packaging material made of unprocessed raw wood provides a pathway for the introduction and spread of such pests.

In order to protect worldwide stocks of trees and forests, the International Plant Protection Committee (IPPC) has taken regulatory action to control the global movement of wooden packaging in the form of ISPM15.

Will it Affect Me?

If you export wooden packaging that contains sawn timber, such as new or second-hand pallets, boxes, crates, cable drums etc. outside the or into the EU you will be affected by these new regulations.

Packaging that is made solely from manufactured board like plywood, OSB, chipboard etc. is exempt.

The new regulations will apply to all arrivals at destination ports, airports etc. This means that all shipments will need to be treated approximately eight weeks before despatch, depending on transit times.

How can I Comply?

The approved measures that have been adopted are as follows:

Heat treatment of wood packaging, which requires heating of the timber to a minimum core temperature of 56C for a minimum of 30 minutes (HT).

or

Fumigation, using Methyl Bromide (MB) to the relevant specification.

In order to join to scheme, manufacturers need to demonstrate that they meet the requirements to a third party assessor. Registered manufacturers are authorised to use to ISPM15 mark, which includes the country of origin and a unique manufacturer's registration number

I need more information, where can I find it?

Note this information is provided as a guide only. Individual country implementation dates may change without notice and it is the responsibility of the exporter to comply with importing country requirements at the time of export.

United States

As of 5 July 2006, imports must comply with requirements of ISPM No. 15 or be subject to removal from the importing country. Additional information is available at: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ppq/wpm/import.html

European Union

Directive 2004/102/EC, which entered into force on 1 March 2005, requires the following measures to be taken for wood packaging material and dunnage entering the EU from all countries:

The wood must be either heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide, in line with ISPM15 procedures.

The wood must be officially marked with the ISPM15 stamp.

From 1 January 2009, all wood packaging material imported into the EU must be debarked. Dunnage must meet the same criteria as wood packaging material. However, it is exempted until the end of 2007 if it is made of wood free from bark, pests and signs of live pests. Rowlinson Packaging were the first wooden case maker in the UK to buy and install a heat chamber, specifically designed for heat treatment.

This allows them to treat either timber or finished cases and pallets from their site at Wardle in Cheshire, in the most cost effective manner.

The treatment (HT and MB) lasts for life, so there is no need to re-treat for returnable packaging.
